Mr Yang will leave the role once a successor has been identified and will revert to his previous role of chief Yahoo! while staying on the firm's board, the company said in a statement this week.
The organisation will vet both internal and external candidates for the role. Mr Yang was appointed chief executive in June 2007 and helped to establish the firm in 1994.
"Having set Yahoo! on a new, more open path, the time is right for me to transition the chief executive role and our global talent to a new leader," Mr Yang commented.
Speculation surrounding Mr Yang's future at the company had been rife since he opted to turn down a takeover bid from Microsoft earlier this year and a search advertising partnership with Google fell through at the last minute.
Because of this, the announcement of a search for a new chief executive is not surprising, Gartner research analyst Michael McGuire told the AFP.
