British internet population tipped to grow further

Friday, 31 October 2008

The UK's online population has grown by 1.3 million people in the last year, according to new figures that may be of interest to the internet marketing sector.

This means that the total number of Britons accessing the web is expected to surpass the 38 million mark by the end of 2008, eMarketer said in its latest report.

Over six in ten of the entire UK population will be online as a result, with this set to rise to almost seven in ten by 2012.

According to eMarketer, the UK will be able to recover quickly from the current economic crisis as a result of this online growth.

"Online behavior has become more complex and sophisticated. UK residents increasingly use the internet as a tool for social and political action, as well as email, shopping, watching videos and keeping up with the latest news," remarked Karin von Abrams, senior analyst at eMarketer and report author.

Meanwhile, recent figures from comScore suggested that 41 per cent of the total web population in the UK visited at least one blog during August.
