UK search trends 'reflecting need for lower prices'
Thursday, 23 October 2008British consumers are making more online searches for cheap second-hand goods amid the economic downturn, according to Hitwise.
Figures from the research company show that more than 22,000 different search terms involving the phrase 'second hand' were used in the 12 weeks to October 11th.
Cars were the most searched for second-hand products, followed by books and furniture, search engine optimisation professionals may be interested to read.
Furthermore, traffic to Freecycle, a website that allows consumers to give unwanted items to others and effectively recycle them, increased by 35 per cent in the last 12 months, Robin Goad of Hitwise noted on his blog.
"The increase in searches for second-hand goods has also benefited classifieds websites, which experienced a 47 per cent increase in traffic between September 2007 and September 2008," he went on to note.
Traffic to price comparison and other discount websites rose by 20 per cent in the 12 months to July, according to separate Hitwise figures revealed last month.
