SEO "key" to image-based marketing

Wednesday, 23 July 2008

Marketers looking to maximise the value of promotional images and videos online would do well to ensure they are optimised for search engines.

This is according to Chrysi Philalithes of Search Insider, who said that businesses should follow the lead set by search engines such as Google when it comes to capitalising on the popularity of rich media among web users.

Google sees 15 per cent of all queries made on the site conducted via its image search facility and marketers can take advantage of this and search engine marketing to enhance their brand's reputation on the internet, the expert noted.

She advised businesses to ensure that all relevant photos make use of search engine optimisation principles to help the likes of Google and Yahoo! to understand what the images pertain to.

"The key to attracting traffic for any set of images is SEO," Ms Philalithes said.

"Search engines can't 'read' still images and understand what they are about, so you need to ensure that you are tagging and optimising your images and your video assets appropriately."

R J Pittman of Google recently told Beet.tv in an interview that the search engine is in the process of creating image processing and visual search that can crawl image pixels.ADNFCR-1453-ID-18696635-ADNFCR
