Consistent websites 'good for SEO'
Friday, 21 November 2008Companies must ensure that their sites follow a consistent structure in order to make the most of search engine optimisation (SEO), according to one expert.
Writing for Search Engine Land, SEO Book author Aaron Wall noted that the internet is still filled with websites that have broken links or missing content and advised firms to avoid this by planning their websites out in advance.
He also recommended that website owners refrain from using a new URL for seasonal content such as Christmas product pages every year, as this can hamper indexing and ultimately SEO.
Instead, webmasters should create one Christmas page and update it every year while archiving the previous year's content.
"In doing this, the core URL keeps building PageRank and anchor text each year, building off of last year's success. Old content remains archived and can be easily findable by linking to archives from the core page," Mr Wall said.
The World Wide Web Consortium offers a Link Checker tool to allow website owners to examine their pages for broken links.
